How much would it cost to see a mechanic when buying a used car privately?
I am new to car buying so I would like to know approximately how much would I have to pay a mechanic to see and inspect a car which I want to buy?
I do not currently have any mechanic as I never had a car. Where is a good place to find one? Yellowpages?
It really does depend on how well you want the car checked over. Professional shops charge $75 to $90 per hour on average. If a car appears to be in good shape, they would have to spend at least 1 1/2 hours to put it on a rack, pull the wheels, check the condition of fluids etc. to give you good information. This expense upfront can save you lots down the road.

$30 or $40. If you take it to your regular mechanic, you could probably talk him into doing it for free if you bring it there for your first year of oil changes (it is worth a shot anyways).
Good Luck!

IF YOU WANT A COMPLETE VEHICLE CHECK OUT THIS WILL TAKE ABOUT 2 OR 3 HOURS, IT SHOULD COST YOU AROUND $150.00 TO $175.00.
IT MIGHT SOUND LIKE A LOT BUT WHEN I DO THEM I PROVIDE THE CUSTOMER WITH A COMPLETE PRINTOUT OF ALL THE DATA THAT I FOUND.
I ALSO CHECK THE VEHICLE FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AND FROM BUMPER TO BUMPER.
I TREAT THE VEHICLE AS IF I WAS GOING TO BUY IT AND MY CUSTOMERS DON'T MIND SPENDING THE MONEY.
$30.00 TO $40.00 WILL GET YOU NOTHING BUT SORROW IN THE LONG RUN.

I would suggest talking to an independent mechanic who has a good reputation, then ask him this question.

Most people think used car guys are right up there with lawyers. Sir, you are charging $150-$175 for an inspection.
Sir, you are preying on people's fear and lining your pockets as well.
The reality is: all used cars are not perfect. Somebody is paying you to rip the car apart. You are going to put the fear of God in them to cover your butt.
You guys are a little short-sighted. Instead of setting yourself up for impending repairs and maintenance down the road, you blow deals up, on perfectly good cars.
By all means, inspect away, if something is really wrong, frame damage, extensive body work, blown head gasket, those kinds of things are legit.
But most reputable dealers do not sell that junk.
A reputable dealer.

you should talk to you normal mechanic and ask him to have a quick look to see if the car is worth giving a full inspection, A good mechanic would beable to reject a heap of junk before a full inspection, then if he thinks the car is ok, you can pay him for a full inspection, good luck and happy motoring,
